Backup cameras are awesome! I like it so much on my R52 that I'll have one on every car I own from now on. Useful even in a small car. Imagine backing out of a parking space between two minivans. You can view the traffic well before you have pulled out.

Welcome to M/A the FUN Mini site.

The back up light on a 2002 should be in the center of the rear bumper just above the exhaust tips.
On later cars the reverse lights were moved to the tail lights and the low rear backup light was changed to a switched rear fog light that was optional.

Well then you could either connect at the back up light switch on the transmission, or tip in to the wiring harness at the rear of the car. I do not know if it will be in the left or right access panel but I belief it will be a blue and green wire. You will have to use a test light to make sure you have the correct wire. Be careful you don't fry your system. Mini's can do odd stuff when you mess with the wiring.

I don't mean to sound critical but why a back up camera on a car so small?

My 3rd backup switch had gone bad, time to put in a toggle and abandon that idea. Like they said, us back up lamp lead +, as your hot lead to a relay.
