I think you are referring to the Renault Dauphine [the spelling may be wrong, but I remember it had an "e" at the end of the second word]

Nah.....Renault made them back in the late '50s thru mid '60s.
My Dad had one. Rear engine, water cooled. Spare tire was located under the front bumper.
