Strong Meeke wants a WRC future (MaxRally.com)

Kris Meeke said crashing out of the lead of Rallye Deutschland back in the summer has made him a stronger driver and could help him to extend his tenure in rallying's top tier.

Speaking after finishing third on Rallye de France yesterday, the works Citroen driver said he’d learned from his error in Trier.

“To inherit the lead and to lose it so quick was quite difficult to swallow at the time but it makes you stronger,” said Meeke. “Today I was comfortable in my own place. I was concentrated just to take the podium for the team today. I really tried hard on day one but couldn’t keep the pace of Jari-Matti and Andreas. If I had pushed more I could have made a mistake. There’s quite a chance for second place in the manufacturers’ championship and we’ll see how it goes in the next two rallies.”

Of his championship prospects, Meeke said securing fourth place was a realistic target with two events and an 11-point margin to overcome.

“Maybe fourth place is possible,” said the Northern Irishman. “It would be a nice reflection of our performances of the second part of the year. It has been a good weekend for us and we are looking forward to the next rallies.”

Despite a strong recent run, Meeke’s still not sure of his WRC future. “Our performances since Poland have got stronger and stronger and consistency has been there. I hope it’s enough to secure our place next year. I would really like to continue and I believe I haven’t reached my full potential yet.”

Historic cars return to the Spanish stages (WRC.com)

A selection of historic rally cars representing three decades of the World Championship will take to the stages of RallyRACC - Rally de EspaÃ±a (23-26 October)

Twenty-two cars will be in action, ranging from the iconic, Ferrari-engined Lancia Stratos (above) to less potent machinery like an ex Carlos Sainz 1982 Seat Panda.

Six cars are from the 1980s Group B era, including an ex Jean Ragnotti Renault 5 Turbo, an ex Bruno Saby Peugeot 205 T16 and a Ford RS200 driven by Sainz.

The cars will be displayed first on Thursday from 1230hrs (local) in the MontjuÃ¯c area of Barcelona, before they are driven on a demonstration lap of the rallyâ€™s opening street stage there from 1700hrs.

The cars will be on static display in Salou during Fridayâ€™s gravel-based competition, but will take to the stages again on Saturday and Sunday when the event returns to asphalt.

They will drive the Escaladei, Colldejou and Salou tests on Saturday, and the La Mussara and Riudecanyes stages on Sunday before crossing the finish podium in Salou at 1200hrs. [Click here to see the full timetable]

Organisers are also staging an event to commemorate this yearâ€™s 50th anniversary of the Rally Catalunya. An exhibition showing the evolution of the rally from its first edition in 1957 will be on display from Friday in the headquarters building in Salou.

Ogier leads in Spain to close on title (WRC.com)

SÃ©bastien Ogier put one hand on the FIA World Rally Championship driversâ€™ title after building a comfortable lead during a dusty opening day at RallyRACC - Rally de EspaÃ±a on Friday.

He completed the six gravel speed tests with a 36.6sec advantage in his Volkswagen Polo R as potential challengers dropped time in the morning due to a combination of hanging dust and the low sun.

Team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala, who must finish ahead of Ogier to keep the title race alive into next monthâ€™s final round in Wales, leapt to second in the final special stage to head a quartet of drivers covered by 4.8sec.

Road opener Ogier expected to lose time over the opening loop of stages as he swept loose gravel off the road. However, his disadvantage was offset by the poor visibility which slowed those behind him in the start order.

Thierry Neuville led briefly this morning and was just 4.6sec behind Ogier until he lost 2min 20sec in the final stage. He was distracted by dust inside his Hyundai i20 and hit a bank, puncturing the rear right tyre which he stopped to change.

Latvala hit a rock in the opening test to begin a frustrating day for the Finn. He did not have the speed to match Ogier and languished in seventh for much of the leg until his final stage charge up the order.

Mads Ã˜stberg was 0.6sec behind in third in a Citroen DS3, but the Norwegian was frustrated after being held up in Kris Meekeâ€™s dust this morning and by Neuvilleâ€™s dust this afternoon. Ã˜stberg was 0.1sec ahead of Andreas Mikkelsenâ€™s Polo R.

Mikko Hirvonen enjoyed a troublefree run to fifth in his Ford Fiesta RS, a further 4.1sec behind, with Robert Kubica completing the top six despite a final stage spin.

Dani Sordo dropped 30sec waiting on the startline of the penultimate test when co-driver Marc Marti miscalculated their start time. However, the Spaniard was seventh in his Hyundai i20, with Martin Prokop, Neuville and Nasser Al-Attiyah completing the leaderboard.

Meeke retired after sliding wide in SS3 and dropping two wheels off the road. He damaged two tyres and although he replaced one in the stage, he had only one spare and stopped on the following liaison section.

Hayden Paddon became the first New Zealander to win a stage since 1999 after topping the timesheets in SS3. But he lost six minutes after spinning his i20 into a bank at the first corner of the next stage and changing two punctured tyres. He later spun and damaged his rear suspension in SS7.

Elfyn Evans had a torrid day. He went off the road three times in his Fiesta RS, retiring after the final occasion with a damaged radiator.

Teams will convert their cars from gravel to asphalt specification tonight ahead of tomorrowâ€™s second leg, when drivers face six stages covering 159.16km.

Ogier holds off Latvala attack in Spain (WRC.com)

SÃ©bastien Ogier repelled a fierce charge from revitalised team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala to lead RallyRACC - Rally de EspaÃ±a after Saturday’s second leg.

Ogier, who will clinch a second consecutive drivers’ title if he finishes ahead of Latvala tomorrow, leads by 27.3sec in a Volkswagen Polo R, despite the Finn winning four of the six special stages in his efforts to hunt down his colleague.

After yesterday’s gravel action, today was asphalt and scorching sunshine ensured a tough test for tyres and brakes as road temperatures reached 35Â°C.

Latvala’s attack was in contrast to a lacklustre day yesterday when he could not match his rival’s pace. But Ogier remained unflustered despite a scare in the second pass through the marathon 50km Escaladei test, which celebrated the rally’s half-century.

He drove the final 20km with a severe vibration after a tyre delaminated and admitted his team-mate pushed him hard.

“I have to congratulate Jari-Matti because he did a good job,” said Ogier. “The plan was to control from the front but there were sections I didn’t control too much because I had to drive very fast to stay with him. He was flying, but my plan was to have a 20sec lead tonight and we have more than that so it’s good.”

Apart from a small brake problem, Latvala was untroubled. “I was disappointed yesterday. I wanted to fight for the win and now that seems a little too far away. I was driving too aggressively and thinking about today’s asphalt rather than the gravel,” he said.

Mikko Hirvonen was third in a Ford Fiesta RS, 1min 18.6sec off the lead, after seeing off Andreas Mikkelsen and Mads Ã˜stberg in their fight for the final podium place. Mikkelsen spun before stopping to replace a damaged tyre while Ã˜stberg fell back to fourth.

Dani Sordo closed to 22.1sec behind in fifth in his Hyundai i20 with team-mate Thierry Neuville recovering to sixth after yesterday’s problem. Mikkelsen slipped to seventh with Martin Prokop, Hayden Paddon and Yuriy Protasov completing the leaderboard.

Robert Kubica drove all morning with only front-wheel drive in his Fiesta RS after breaking a differential as he warmed his tyres before the first stage. He later retired after ripping a front wheel from the car.

Tomorrow drivers face two loops of two stages covering 72.06km. The second pass through the Riudecanyes live TV test is the Power Stage, with bonus points awarded to the fastest three drivers.

SÃ©bastien Ogier clinched back-to-back world drivers’ titles by winning RallyRACC - Rally de EspaÃ±a on Sunday.

He took victory by 11.3sec in a Volkswagen Polo R from team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala, the only man who could beat him to the crown. The Frenchman becomes the eighth driver to lift the title more than once and did so with one round remaining.

Ogier built a comfortable lead on the first full day of the mixed-surface event. Latvala, who was disappointed with his speed on that gravel leg, attacked hard during the final two days on asphalt but an unflustered Ogier measured his pace perfectly.

His only scare came on Saturday afternoon when he drove 20km with a damaged tyre, fearful it would deflate and require him to stop and replace it.

“It’s a great achievement to win one title but even better to take a second,” said Ogier, after embracing his parents at the finish of the final stage. “It’s a confirmation and proves the first title was not a one-off.

It’s been a fantastic weekend, but it was tough. I pushed so hard on leg one and it was a long two days on Tarmac where I had to watch Jari-Matti flying. I had to be clever and keep watching him all the time,” he added.

Ogier’s victory was the 23rd of his career and Volkswagen’s 11th of the season, equaling the record set by Citroen in 2005 and 2008.

Mikko Hirvonen’s third place in a Ford Fiesta RS was his second podium of the year, the Finn too strong for Mads Ã˜stberg and Andreas Mikkelsen on asphalt. He finished 1min 42.2sec behind Ogier and 31.1sec ahead of Ã˜stberg, a Saturday afternoon puncture ending Mikkelsen’s hopes.

Dani Sordo closed on Ã˜stberg throughout the final leg in his Hyundai i20 but the Spaniard fell 8.9sec short in fifth. A first-leg error when co-driver Marc Marti miscalculated a stage start time and they waited for almost 30sec proved costly.

Mikkelsen passed Thierry Neuville for sixth in the penultimate stage. However, he incurred a 10sec penalty after a timing error at the start of the final test and dropped behind again.

Martin Prokop, Hayden Paddon and Nasser Al-Attiyah completed the leaderboard, Al-Attiyah inheriting 10th when Ken Block punctured a front left tyre in the final stage.

Unseasonably high temperatures ensured tough conditions for tyres and brakes during the 17 stages covering 372.96km in the Tarragona region, south of Barcelona.

The final round, Wales Rally GB, is based at Deeside on 13 - 16 November.

Route

Opening night start ceremony and super special stage in south coast town of Cagliari kicks off new-look route.
The second day takes competitors to well-known stages in scenic hills and undulating forests south of Olbia.
Saturdayâ€™s leg returns to the same area, before ending with two tests near Sassari in the north. Itâ€™s a HUGE day with 188.50km of stages, including two passes of the 59.70km Monte Lerno.
Sassari stages are repeated on the final day, as well as two runs over a new stage near Alghero.

Fast but narrow roads lined with bushes, trees or rocks right on the edge leave no room for error.

Italyâ€™s WRC counter was formerly a mixed surface event based in Sanremo, and known as the Rally of the Flowers when it was first held in 1928.
It formed part of the WRC from the championshipâ€™s beginning in 1973.
MichÃ¨le Mouton became the first and only woman to win a WRC round when she triumphed in 1981.
The rally moved to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in 2004.

West coast town of Alghero replaces Olbia as the base and location for the service park.
The islandâ€™s capital, Cagliari, welcomes the rally for the first time. Thursdayâ€™s start and opening stage will be held there after which cars will be transported back to Alghero.
Oschiri hosts a remote service during the opening leg.

A Hard-earned lead for Latvala (WRC.com)

VW Motorsport’s Jari-Matti Latvala will take a healthy 22.4s lead into day two of Rally Italia Sardegna after a bruising first day on the island’s rough gravel stages.

However, he didn’t have things his own way. Running second on the road behind team-mate Sebastien Ogier, he too had the unenviable task of sweeping the slippery gravel and sand from the road ahead.

It was therefore little surprise that the cars running further down the start order showed the quickest pace on the opening loop of four stages.

The Hyundai pairing of Thierry Neuville and Juho Hanninen – running seventh and 12th respectively – traded places at the top of the leaderboard on the first three stages.

But their hopes of victory were dashed on the final stage of the morning at ‘Loelle 1’ when they both hit trouble. Neuville suddenly stopped 4.1km into the 27.3km stage with damaged front-right suspension. He repaired the damage by the roadside, but dropped 23 minutes. He was out of the hunt.

Hanninen meanwhile, lost his place at the top of the leaderboard in more spectacular fashion. The Finn rolled his i20 WRC into the undergrowth on SS5 and the damage was too severe to continue.

With both Hyundai’s in trouble, Latvala launched an attack on the rally lead. His stunning stage time on SS5 allowed him to jump from sixth place into the lead. And that was where he stayed.

It’s been a good day,” he said. “We had brake problems on the first stage this morning but it’s all gone well since then. I need to stay cool and keep the same speed tomorrow.”

Ogier’s journey to the top of the leaderboard was almost as impressive as Latvala’s. The Frenchman’s stage times improved dramatically on the cleaner roads in the afternoon and he stormed from sixth place at the midday point to second place after the final stage.

“I couldn’t go any faster today,” the world champion explained. “I’m going to continue to push tomorrow for sure.”

Third place went to Citroen’s Mads Ostberg at the end of the last stage. He had a consistent day but his pace reduced when his team-mate Kris Meeke retired on SS5 with a loss of battery power.

Ostberg had to drive with the added pressure of knowing he had to bring home some valuable manufacturers’ points for his French team and that meant he didn’t take any risks.

Volkswagen’s third Polo R WRC, driven by Andreas Mikkelsen, finished in fourth place and within striking distance of Ostberg’s Citroen heading into the second day, while Robert Kubica and Elfyn Evans gave M-Sport something to smile about by completing the top six. Malcolm Wilson’s team had lost Mikko Hirvonen’s Ford Fiesta RS WRC in a dramatic fire earlier in the day.

The top ten was rounded out by privateer drivers Martin Prokop – who ran as high as third earlier in the day, Henning Solberg in his Ford Focus RS WRC and the WRC 2 Fiestas of Rajhi Al Yazeed and Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Tomorrow's competitive action consists of four stages, totalling 156.8km. The crews will face the longest stage in the entire championship twice – the 59km Monte Lerno test that also features the spectacular 'Micky's Jump'.

Mikko Hirvonenâ€™s Rally Italia Sardegna came to a fiery and spectacular end this morning as he and co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen drove to the fourth stage.

The M-Sport World Rally Team duo were looking to progress from their sixth place overall at the 20.29km â€˜Coiluna-Crastazza 1â€™ stage, but after stopping to change the tyres on their Ford Fiesta RS WRC, the 2012 Rally Italia winners noticed flames licking up from the rear of their car as they get back underway to travel to the stage start.

They quickly stopped the car to inspect the problem, but the flames quickly took hold. They tried to use their fire extinguishers but their efforts were in vain. The car was destroyed in minutes.

Hirvonen said he was confused by what caused the fire. â€œWe changed the tyres and checked the pressures as normal between stages and everything was okay," he explained. "But then the car caught fire for no reason. When I was fighting the fire, the rear bumper was fine and sometimes that can break and catch on the exhaust which causes a fire. Itâ€™s strange.â€

M-Sport has said it plans to establish the cause of the fire when the car returns to the service park in Alghero later today.

Ogier pushes intoRally Italia lead (WRC.com)

Sebastien Ogier will take a 1m 40s lead into the final day of Rally Italia Sardegna after he forced his way past team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala on Saturday’s final stage.

With top championship points at stake, the VW team-mates were determined not to concede any time to one another. But Latvala fired an early warning to Ogier on the very first test as he went 6.3s faster. That extended his lead to 28.7s.

However, Ogier wasn’t thinking about giving up. He immediately struck back on the next two stages. He snatched 11s on the first run through the 59.13km ‘Monte Lerno’ stage, before taking another 5.4s on the penultimate stage of the day. Heading into the final test, Latvala’s lead stood at an increasingly fragile 12.3s.

Ogier’s unrelenting pressure then paid the ultimate dividend on the second run through Monte Lerno as Latvala made a mistake. He allowed his VW Polo R WRC to stray off line and slam into a rock.

“It was my mistake,” he admitted afterwards. “The rear of the car jumped out of the ruts and we damaged the wheel on a rock. I had to stop and change it.”

Latvala’s unscheduled wheel change cost him almost two minutes and he eventually reached the stage finish 2m 13s down on his team-mate after battling with a long brake pedal for the rest of the stage.

Ogier’s job was done. He was the new rally leader.

With Latvala hitting trouble, Mads Ostberg inherited second place. He was 1m 40s behind Ogier’s Polo WRC at the final time control.

The Citroen driver had been battling with Andreas Mikkelsen for much of the day in a bid to hold on to his third place and he showed a clean pair of heels to his VW rival when Mikkelsen had to carry a broken damper into the final long stage.

Mikkelsen cautious approach meant he dropped into fourth place, 36s behind Latvala. Ostberg left the service park knowing he would only have a 21.3s advantage over the Finn heading into the final day. But he was confident he could hold Latvala off on the final four stages. “For sure, we can push harder if we need to tomorrow,” he said.

Elfyn Evans ended the day in fifth place after he was gifted a place when Robert Kubica ripped the right-front wheel off his Ford Fiesta RS WRC on SS12. Martin Prokop, who was suffering with severe back pain in the afternoon, completed the top six in his private Ford.

Henning Solberg’s Fiesta was seventh, albeit almost six minutes ahead of Kubica who was classified in eighth. Khalid Al-Qassimi’s Citroen DS3 WRC finished in ninth place, 1m 02s ahead of WRC 2 leader Lorenzo Bertelli in his Ford Fiesta RRC.

Ogier extends lead with Rally Italia win (WRC.com)

Sebastien Ogier will leave Rally Italia Sardegna with a 33-point series lead after a hard-fought victory at the seventh round of the FIA World Rally Championship.

The reigning champion took the lead of the event on Saturday’s final stage after his constant pressure appeared to force team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala into making a costly mistake. The Finn had to stop to change a rear wheel after clouting a rock at the side of the road.

With a 1m 40.2s lead heading into the final day, Ogier only had to keep out of trouble on the remaining quartet of rough gravel stages to take maximum points. He did exactly that and completed the event with a 1m 23.1s advantage over second-placed Mads Ostberg.

Ogier’s haul of championship points was swelled by another bonus point when he finished third fastest on the rally-ending Power Stage at ‘Cala Flumini’.
He will head into the upcoming Rally Poland with a 33-point lead over Latvala in the championship. “I had a very tough beginning on this rally and had to put pressure on Jari (Matti Latvala) yesterday. Luckily that paid off and this is a really good feeling,” he said.

Ostberg moved up to third in the championship after a confident performance in his Citroen DS3 WRC. He started the final day with the pressure of having Latvala only 21.3s behind him, but he expertly managed the gap. Latvala beat him on three of the day’s four stages but his time gain wasn’t enough to edge past into second. Ostberg took the place by 9.7s.

Power Stage winner, Andreas Mikkelsen, ended the event in fourth place. The bonus points that were up for grabs on the final stage were all the Norwegian had to fight for given the size of the gap to Latvala in front. But victory in the 8.8km test ensured he and co-driver Ola Floene renewed their relationship on a high.

We have finished a great rally and I can’t wait for the rest of the season. We want podiums now, for sure," the VW driver said.

The Ford Fiesta RS WRCs of Elfyn Evans and Martin prokop rounded out the top six. Evans achieved his aim of bettering the result he scored on the event in 2013 when he was driving a WR Car for the first time. He was fifth, 1m 23.5s ahead of Prokop.

Privateer driver Henning Solberg finished seventh in his M-Sport-prepared Ford Fiesta RS WRC and was more than five minutes ahead of Robert Kubica’s identical machine. The former F1 driver had slipped down the order after picking up 10 minutes of Rally 2 penalties on Saturday’s penultimate stage.

Ninth place was filled by the Ford Fiesta RRC of WRC 2 winner Lorenzo Bertelli, while Khalid Al-Qassimi could only end the event in 10th after suffering with set-up problems for much of the rally in his Citroen DS3 WRC.

The decision by the Volkswagen Board to extend VW's involvement in the WRC right through to the end of 2019 is the best news the sport has had this year.

It boosts the WRC at a stroke, and all rally with it.

One of the biggest carmakers in the world really does believe in rally and is going to stick with it.

For all the doomsayers, it's a resounding Shut Up.

Yes, it comes at a price.

The WRC has got to improve. That means change.

People donâ€™t like change, but the alternative option is stark. Evolve or perhaps disappearâ€¦

To survive, WRC must improve its media coverage. Big figures are banded about of the numbers of "media" now signed on for WRC events, but the truth is that the quality of the media attending probably does not match that of a decade or 2 decades ago.

It's mirrored in the media coverage achieved - or not achieved.

The same for BBC Radio, which was reporting the WRC on its sports channel every half an hour during rallies over a decade ago.

And where was the mass broadsheet and tabloid coverage of WRC Sardinia on Monday morning?

The calibre of the media channels attending WRC and the coverage achieved have each fallen a very long way. Where now are the big national dailies, the major news agencies, the key radio broadcasters who were a key part of the WRC media 15 years ago? Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are terribly exciting, but they are not mainstream mediaâ€¦

Crucially, thereâ€™s not enough big TV. Online viewing is great, but it is not enough for the major brands who can commit millions of Euros to their motorsport programmes, nor for the big sponsors. They still want real television.
