Ogier slams rivals in WRC rules row (racer.com)

World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Ogier has set himself against his rivals in what is becoming a bitter dispute about running order rules.

A regulation change at the end of last season ensured the championship leader would run first on the road on the opening day of WRC rounds, before the classification was reversed for the Saturday and Sunday start lists.

Faced with opening the road on last week's Rally Italy, Ogier dropped as low as 10th before fighting back to win the event, leaving him furious with those in favour of the current regulation.

"The FIA wants to make some sort of show from the rally by using this regulation, but, for me, this is the regulation for the loser," Ogier said.

"There are some drivers who are happy to win like this, but I am not one of them.

"I don't like this rule, it's stupid.

"I don't understand why they want to penalise the fastest guy in the world championship and I don't understand what was wrong with the qualifying stage we had last year."

Citroen drivers Mads Ostberg and Kris Meeke said they thought the current situation made sense.

Ostberg, who scored his best result with Citroen in finishing second in Italy, said: "I'm fine with my position in the championship. And it's part of the game, where you start on a rally.

"Ogier talks about it all the time. Well, you [Ogier] are the fastest in the world; you can go first: f*** off!"

Meeke added: "Motorsport series all over the world are using systems to handicap cars, be it weight or cutting engine power - we have the most natural handicapping system in the world and it makes sense to use it.

"Look at this rally, the fight was so close on Friday; we had Hyundai one-two for a while, it's great for the spectacle of the sport."

The current running order regulation is expected to be debated at August's WRC Commission meeting.

As I recall, the qualifying system they dropped this year to go back to the old starting system only existed because of all the complaining Loeb did about having to run first. No one else, Ogier included, seemed to mind the old system when Loeb was complaining. But the organizers listened to him and switched to a qualifying stage, Loeb no longer needed to clean the road, and the rallies got even more predictable than they had been. That is, until he retired.

Route

Based in Mikolajki, several hours north of Warsaw, in Masurian lake district.
Three Thursday afternoon stages, including one that runs into darkness.
Friday combines stages in Poland and Lithuania, with remote service in Lithuania at Druskininkai.
A morning test and two evening stages in Poland sandwich four Lithuanian tests.
Legs 2 and 3 based in Polish provinces of Warmia and Mazury, east and north-east of Mikolajki.
Mikolajki Arena will host four super special stages, two under floodlights, with two cars at a time on track.

Challenge

Drivers lack experience of the roads as Poland has not featured in WRC since 2009.
All stages in Lithuania and three in Poland are totally new. The only test used in an identical format to 2009 is at the Mikolajki Arena.
Very fast roads will see speeds approach those of Rally Finland.
Tall grass lines many sections, limiting visibility on the approach to corners.
Grass also hides rocks so cutting corners is a risky pastime.

Car spec

Gravel suspension.
Soft compound tyres are the primary option, but hard rubber will also be available.

History

First established in 1921, Rally Poland is one of the worldâ€™s oldest rallies.
It was included in the inaugural WRC season in 1973 when there were only three classified finishers. Four other crews completed the route but were excluded for being out of time.
It left the calendar and became an asphalt event in the European Championship.
It returned to WRC in 2009 when Mikko Hirvonen won, after which it was again removed.

Lithuania features on WRC itinerary for the first time â€“ the 32nd different country to feature in the championship.
Poland and Lithuania have different time zones but the rally will use Polish time.

I think the rocks might be winning today in Poland.

Meeke hit a rock and got a puncture.

Evans hit a rock and broke his suspension.

Kubica hit a rock and had a puncture.

Latvala hit a rock and broke his suspension (though he managed to make it back to service).

Ostberg hit a rock, lost the front left corner and rolled.

Kubica hit another rock and lost the right rear corner.

It's not just rocks, though, there were plenty of other incidents including a few rollovers.

Two stages (reruns) were cancelled yesterday due to spectators standing too close and deterioration of the stage. Look at those ruts!

And something new to me, Mikkelson fined for not only cutting but actually skipping a corner yesterday...and he admitted both that he did it and planned it in advance!

Volkswagen Motorsport II driver Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Ola Floene admit to 'inappropriate behaviour' on Rally Poland after deliberately departing the road of SS2 and crossing an adjacent field in an attempt to gain time

Volkswagen Motorsport II driver Andreas Mikkelsen has been fined after he deliberately cut a corner on Thursday in SS2 of Rally Poland in a bid to gain time. He has also been warned that he will be excluded from the rally concerned should he repeat the offence again during the 2014 WRC season.

The Norwegian, who is currently battling for the lead of the event with Sebastien Ogier, finished the test - the 17.24 km run through Kruklanki 1 - with the second best time, 0.8 seconds off Juho Hanninen and 0.9 seconds up on Ogier in third.

In a statement issued by the stewards, Mikkelsen and co-driver Ola Floene said that the action had been planned.

Volkswagen has confirmed it will not appeal the ruling.

The full statement issued by the stewards late last night read:

The Stewards having been made aware of a situation occurring during the running of SS2 (Kruklanki 1) concerning Competitor No 9 Volkswagen Motorsport II, driver Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Ola Floene, summoned the crew and team representative to appear before them.

The crew were accompanied by Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, and Sven Smeets, Team Manager.

The Stewards stated that the crew deliberately departed the road of the special stage and crossed an adjacent field in an attempt to reduce the stage time.

The Stewards showed a video of the occasion to the crew and the team representatives. The crew acknowledged that this occurred and that they had planned this action. They also stated that they accepted it was inappropriate behaviour.

DECIDE

1 To apply a penalty of exclusion from the rally concerned should this behaviour be repeated during the remainder of the 2014 WRC.

2. To apply an immediate fine of 5000 Euros.

The Stewards emphasised the severity of this behaviour and the potential risks it introduced.

Route

University town of JyvÃ¤skylÃ¤ is the hub of everything and Paviljonki service park in the centre draws huge crowds.
Classic smooth gravel stages among forests and lakes with massive jumps.
New-look itinerary begins on Thursday evening with a short, sharp leg north-east of JyvÃ¤skylÃ¤.
Friday is the longest day and heads-south-west, while Saturday includes big jumps over some of Finlandâ€™s most well-known stages.
Short Sunday loop features two passes over the classic RuuhimÃ¤ki test.

Challenge

A mix of hard, wide roads with narrower more technical sections.
Flat out from start to finish. It is affectionately known as the Finnish Grand Prix and eight of the 10 fastest WRC rallies have been here.
Pace notes must be perfect. Blind crests often hide corners and itâ€™s vital to position the car correctly before take-off to ensure maximum speed through the bend.
Speeds are so high that time differences are small and there is little opportunity to regain time after a mistake.
One of the hardest rallies for co-drivers as high speeds demand a constant, pinpoint accurate delivery of pace notes.
Mastering the jumps. If the speed is too high, the carâ€™s aerodynamics will force the back down and the front will rise. The tactic is to brake before take-off and accelerate full throttle over the jump.

Car spec

Gravel suspension.
Packed gravel roads mean soft compound tyres are the usual choice, but hard compound rubber is also available.
Super-smooth stages mean cars can be prepared in the knowledge that mechanical issues are rare.

History

Dates back to 1951 when it was launched as a means of deciding the Finnish entries for Rallye Monte-Carlo.
It took on the name 1000 Lakes Rally and was included in the calendar for the WRC in its first year in 1973.
It has been dominated by Finnish drivers who have won 52 of the 63 editions. Top of the roll of honour are Hannu Mikkola and Marcus GrÃ¶nholm with seven wins.

Praise for ‘player’ Meeke (MaxRally.com)

Kris Meeke is third after four stages of Rally Finland – and he’s impressed the two drivers ahead of him in the process.

Meeke is 9.2s behind leader Jari-Matti Latvala and 4.5s adrift of second-place Sebastien Ogier starting Friday’s nine stages.

“It’s been a good fight very close with Seb and also Kris has been doing really, really good times and a good performance here,” said Volkswagen driver Latvala.

Ogier added: “I have to push and I want to enjoy this race. It’s nice to have a close battle with Jari and now Kris is joining us.”

Citroen driver Meeke admitted he could go faster but was happy with his efforts on day one in Finland. “I was pushing to my comfortable limit,” he said. “Maybe if it was the last stage and you were 0.5 behind there would be something but I was really happy with my speed today and to be close to these guys. But it’s only day one of four and we have 22 more stages so it’s a long, long way to go.”

Meeke is predicting an “interesting” second day as the rally heads south of Jyvaskyla, firstly to the Pihlajakoski test, last sampled by WRC competitors in 1987, and then on to Paijala, the rally’s most southerly stage, which includes a previously unused section.

“Friday morning is going to be interesting because the first two stages are completely new and in Finland it always creates extra excitement when you have new pace notes on a new road,” said Meeke. “Normally everyone has so much experience knowing where to place the car but tomorrow morning is going to be quite tricky. Okay not so many crests and jumps like on the big stages but it’s going to be interesting.”

Latvala sets early pace in Finland (WRC.com)

Jari-Matti Latvala controlled Thursdayâ€™s (31 July) short opening leg of Neste Oil Rally Finland to build a 4.5sec overnight lead.

The Finn delighted his home fans by setting fastest time on three of the four special stages in a Volkswagen Polo R to head team-mate and FIA World Rally Championship leader SÃ©bastien Ogier.

Afternoon rain provided early starters Latvala and Ogier with the best of the grip, the soft gravel road surface deteriorating with the passage of more cars.

Latvala took full advantage to win the first two stages and share fastest time with Ogier in the next. The Frenchman ended the day by taking the honours in the spectacular JyvÃ¤skylÃ¤ street test.

Latvalaâ€™s only drama was on the last corner of the day when he ripped the front right wing from his Polo R. â€œThere was a chicane with a straw bale on the inside. I cut it too much and hit the bale, but it was nothing too serious,â€ said 29-year-old Latvala.

Kris Meeke is third, the Citroen DS3 pilot 9.2sec behind Latvala and the only other driver in contact with the leading duo. Mikko Hirvonen snatched fourth in his Ford Fiesta RS on the final stage, but he is already 26.4sec from the lead.

Juho HÃ¤nninen initially held fourth but the Finn lost 15sec in the badly rutted penultimate test and then dropped behind Hirvonen in the final stage. The gap between them is only 0.7sec, and the Polo R of Andreas Mikkelsen rounds off the top six.

Seventh is Mads Ostberg, but the Norwegian was unhappy with the handling of his DS3. He heads Thierry Neuville, the Belgian lacking confidence with his pace notes which proved too slow for the ultra-fast forest roads.

Robert Kubica and Hayden Paddon complete the top 10 after Henning Solberg slipped off the leaderboard when he punctured a front left tyre in the penultimate Lankamaa stage. Craig Breen suffered a similar problem in the test.

The only major retirement was Jarkko Nikara who crashed his Fiesta RS heavily in the penultimate stage.

Drivers restart tomorrow at 07.30 for two identical loops of four stages south-west of JyvÃ¤skylÃ¤, before a second pass through the city centre Harju street stage. More than half the 134.47km stage distance will be new. Itâ€™s a long day with drivers reaching the overnight halt at 21.45.

Latvala takes control at Rally Finland (WRC.com)

A blistering Friday afternoon performance from Jari-Matti Latvala enabled him to stretch his advantage at the head of the Neste Oil Rally Finland leaderboard.

The Finn added less than four seconds to his overnight lead during this morning’s four special stages. But a hat-trick of stage wins this afternoon allowed him to build a 19.7sec lead in his Volkswagen Polo R at the end of the second leg of the four-day event.

“We pushed hard and took some really big risks. I felt relaxed and had a good feeling, and when I’m relaxed I normally do my best performance,” said Latvala, who survived an early morning scare when he dropped his car into a ditch.

The ultra-fast gravel roads suited Kris Meeke, who moved his Citroen DS3 into second, relegating world champion SÃ©bastien Ogier’s Polo R into third. The gap between them is 1.6sec.

The Northern Ireland driver showed his best pace to date for the French team and won a stage this morning. Stage opener Ogier took on an unwilling role as sweeper as the afternoon sun dried the roads, leaving a coating of loose surface gravel.

“It was a frustrating afternoon,” admitted the Frenchman. “But I’m still happy with what I’ve done and happy to finish my sweeping role.”

Andreas Mikkelsen, Mikko Hirvonen and Mads Ã˜stberg fought hard behind the leading trio. Hirvonen held the initiative for most of the day until a spin allowed Ã˜stberg, who became increasingly confident after overnight set-up changes, moved ahead.

But Mikkelsen leapfrogged them both to hold a 1.2sec advantage in his Polo R over the Norwegian’s DS3, with Hirvonen a further 1.9sec adrift in his Fiesta RS.

Hayden Paddon showed good pace with an oil-thirsty Hyundai i20 to hold seventh with Elfyn Evans (Fiesta RS), Juho HÃ¤nninen (Hyundai i20) and Craig Breen (Fiesta RS) completing the leaderboard.

HÃ¤nninen held fourth until he punctured and later rolled in SS6, losing a minute. Intermittent power steering problems hindered his recovery.

Thierry Neuville swiped the rear of his i20 against the scenery in the opening stage, ripping the rear wing from the car. He struggled on with no aero assistance but the impact damaged the roll cage and he retired from the rally at the mid-leg service.

Robert Kubica crashed 1.6km into the opening test and damaged the front left suspension on his Fiesta RS. Martin Prokop crashed his similar car this afternoon and Michal Solowow failed to leave the mid-leg service with a fluid leak in his engine.

Saturday’s penultimate leg offers another long day at the wheel. Drivers restart at 07.00 to tackle two identical loops of five stages covering 130.36km before the overnight halt at 21.51.

Wrong note to blame for Kubica off (MaxRally.com)

Robert Kubica says a faulty pace note caused his off on stage five of Rally Finland this morning.

Kubica was in ninth overall when he went off the road 1.6 kilometres from the stage start and damaged the front-left corner of his M-Sport Ford Fiesta in the process.

“On a quick section one and a half kilometres into the stage there was a wrong pace note,” Kubica explained. “It said ‘six-left-plus-long-over-crest’ so I went in at full throttle and high speed. Unfortunately one piece of information was missing - that it unloads the car – so it took off the road and I went too wide onto the grass. Nothing would have happened if there was a bit of a straight afterwards. Unfortunately the road went right, and we were deeply on the inside of the corner. We were thrown to the outside and we hit something with the left front. The car did a full spin in the air and we landed on the other side of the road. Luckily the damage wasn’t too severe, but it was too much to continue.”

Kubica added: “The biggest problem in that situation was an unloaded car because of the crest. I hadn't noticed that during recce; I only noticed when we were there at full speed. It is very difficult to foresee these things as I am not experienced enough to know for sure which crests will unload the car. But on the other hand If you want to drive with good pace it would be difficult to slow down before every sixth-gear corner because there are so many of them here.

With his car repaired, Kubica will restart on Saturday. “I regret all the mileage I lost today. Yesterday we were taking no risks and we were driving very well. Today, while doing the same, we finished far too early. Tomorrow we just have to continue with the same attitude.”

Ogier blamed his times and standing on having to do road sweeping duties. That ended yesterday. Today he made some progress but things didn't change as much as I'm sure he would have predicted.

Latvala holds lead after Finland drama (WRC.com)

A defiant Jari-Matti Latvala ended Saturdayâ€™s penultimate leg of Rally Finland with a slender 3.4sec lead over team-mate SÃ©bastien Ogier following a dramatic finale to the day.

Five wins from six stages enabled Latvala to stretch his overnight lead from 19.7sec to a comfortable 31.1sec. But the Finn hit a hole across the road in the rutted second pass through JukojÃ¤rvi (SS20) and broke the front right brake caliper on his Polo R.

He drove the final three tests with just three brakes and championship leader Ogier, who earlier indicated it would be â€˜stupidâ€™ to try to catch Latvala, seized his chance. He was fastest through the final four stages to set up a thrilling sprint to the finish tomorrow.

â€œI had to hold on,â€ said Latvala. â€œIâ€™ve worked so hard and I didnâ€™t come here to lose this rally. Weâ€™ll get the car fixed in service and tomorrow weâ€™re in the fight for victory. I donâ€™t care so much about the world championship right now, this is about Rally Finland.â€

Ironically both Ogier and third-placed Kris Meeke hit the same hole as Latvala but escaped unscathed. Meeke started the day in second ahead of Ogier but refused to be drawn into a battle and ended 29.0sec behind after a troublefree day in his Citroen DS3.

â€œItâ€™s not nice what happened to Jari-Matti,â€ said Ogier. â€œI canâ€™t smile too much about the situation. I have a chance to win, but it came about by chance because Jari-Matti was doing a great job at the front.â€

Andreas Mikkelsen lay fourth in another Polo R, the Norwegian seeing off challenges from Mads Ã˜stberg and Mikko Hirvonen. Mikkelsen ended the day with no brakes while Hirvonen broke the front right shock absorber on his Ford Fiesta RS in JukojÃ¤rvi and lost time.

Hayden Paddon was sixth in a Hyundai i20, holding off team-mate Juho HÃ¤nninen by 28.8sec. Elfyn Evans was eighth, the Welshman frustrated at not being able to raise his speed this afternoon with Craig Breen and Henning Solberg completing the leaderboard.

Ã˜stberg was the only major retirement. He was withdrawn at the mid-leg service when FIA scrutineers discovered damage to his roll cage following a massive impact with a stone. The Citroen DS3 driver was fighting Andreas Mikkelsen for fourth at the time.

Tomorrowâ€™s final leg is the shortest. Drivers depart JyvÃ¤skylÃ¤ at 08.15 for three stages covering 36.60km. The tests are Finland classics with two passes through RuuhimÃ¤ki, the second of which is the live TV Power Stage, sandwiching MyhinpÃ¤Ã¤ before the 15.00 finish.
