I'm surprised Mikkelsen got away with this. Looks like he hit a stump first and that caused the loss of control and the collision with the tree. Expected his right rear suspension to be deranged.

Clearly, they found some snow today. I think it was all on the stages in Norway. On the other hand, they've already cancelled one of only two stages scheduled for Sun.

Ogier holds off Paddon on opening day (crash.net)

Sebastien Ogier has established a comfortable lead at the end of an eventful first day for the Rally Sweden, ahead of Hayden Paddon, but Kris Meeke and Jari-Matti Latvala are out.

Having topped all three stages of the morning loop, though Ogier failed to top the timesheets in the slushier afternoon loop as the running order played its part, he was fast enough to keep his lead constant as those behind slipped out of contention.

Indeed, having been chased initially by VW team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen, the Norwegian suffered an off on SS7 that would drop him back to seventh, though he would climb a spot before the day was out.

Helped along by topping that stage, Kris Meeke briefly elevated himself to second position in the Citroen DS3, but his rally is all-but-over after he struck an unsighted rock mid-corner and damaged the car's steering. It comes after he suffered a similar fate in the Rallye Monte Carlo whilst challenging for the lead.

Similarly, it was to be a desperately disappointing day for Jari-Matti Latvala, who struggled with driveshaft issues from the opening stage, only to retire with suspension problems before the day was out. Like Meeke, it is his second DNF a row, but he has the chance to restart under Rally 2

Their misfortune, however, would play into the hands of Paddon, whose more favourable position in the running order would see him win two stages and catapult from a morning seventh to an end-of-day second position, 26secs behind the comfortable Ogier.

Indeed, on a strong day for those starting later on the running order as the event's warmer-than-usual conditions took its toll, Mads Ostberg rounded out the top three in the M-Sport Ford Fiesta, while Ott Tanak was an impressive fourth at the end of the leg, the DMACK tyres working better in the tricky surface.

Dani Sordo made it a strong start for Hyundai in fifth place â€“ making up for mechanical problems hampering Thierry Neuville all day - ahead of the recovering Mikkelsen, with WRC wild-card Henning Solberg enjoying an unflustered run to seventh in the Adapta Ford Fiesta RS.

Making his much anticipated Citroen WRC debut, Craig Breen kept it clean to claim a top three stage time en route to eighth one the leaderboard, ahead of Eric Camilli and Lorenzo Bertelli.

In WRC2, Elfyn Evans leads at the end of the leg, 17secs ahead of Teemu Suninen.

Only 5 stages today and just the Power Stage tomorrow.

The best thing about today's result (IMO) is Ogier leads by only 17.1sec and, if he is to be believed, he's had to work hard for that lead. "I was completely flat out. I took so many risks and couldn't have gone any faster" And that's with a couple of his main rivals, Latvala and Meeke, way down the order due to retirements yesterday.

SÃ©bastien Ogier kept Hayden Paddon at bay during Saturday's second leg of Rally Sweden to take a seemingly secure lead into the final day.

Although Paddon carved into the Frenchman's advantage in the snowy forest speed tests, Ogier repelled the Kiwi to hold a 17.1sec lead in his Volkswagen Polo R with just the live TV Power Stage remaining tomorrow afternoon.

Up to 10cm of snow filled the forests overnight and the slippery surface was bad news for road opener Ogier. He ploughed a clean line which Paddon, starting six cars further back, took advantage of to pile on the pressure.

Although Ogier won the opening speed test to widen the margin to more than half a minute, the snow was deeper in the following test and Paddon cut the deficit to 8.8sec on his debut in Hyundai's 2016-specification i20.

Despite a heart-stopping sideways slide in the penultimate stage, Ogier regained vital seconds in the final three tests while Paddon managed the wear on his studded Michelin tyres as gravel reappeared on the roads.

"I was completely flat out. I took so many risks and couldn't have gone any faster," admitted Ogier.

Paddon appeared to have settled for second, explaining: "It's about maintaining my position now. We went into the penultimate stage 10sec behind Ogier and that's like a minute to anyone else. We need to be smart."

Mads Ã˜stberg lost third in the opening stage after flirting with a ditch, but quickly reasserted himself in the final podium place in his Ford Fiesta RS, 25.2sec behind Paddon.

Andreas Mikkelsen briefly demoted his fellow Norwegian, but the Volkswagen Polo R pilot lost any realistic chance of a top three finish when he entered a corner too fast courtesy of an over-optimistic pace note and spun. He was 25.1sec behind Ã˜stberg.

Although he was uncomfortable on frozen gravel sections, Estonia's Ott TÃ¤nak was fifth in another Fiesta RS, while a front left puncture slowed Dani Sordo and the Spanish i20 driver fell back from the podium battle into sixth.

Henning Solberg was seventh, despite losing a handful of seconds after stalling the engine of his Fiesta RS at a stage start. He is under pressure from Craig Breen, who was only 3.6sec behind after a strong debut in CitroÃ«n's DS 3. WRC 2 leader Elfyn Evans and second-placed Pontus Tidemand completed the leaderboard.

Jari-Matti Latvala won two stages as he climbed to 27th following his disastrous opening leg. The only major retirements were Eric Camilli, who rolled his Fiesta RS heavily, and Yazeed Al Rajhi, who suffered broken steering after hitting a rock.

Sunday's final leg comprises just the 15.87km VÃ¤rmullsÃ¥sen Power Stage before the afternoon finish in Karlstad.

All credit to the Colin's Crest jumpers, as it doesn't look simple.

It always seems to be the Italian drivers from all classes who I remember, perhaps because many seem to 'act out' their nationality so well, so I was surprised to find that the wonderfully exuberant Gigi Galli doesn't figure in the Colin's Crest records as I thought he was one of the most stylish jumpers even if he didn't always stay out of the trees.

Here he is in Finland doing 58m - more or less crest to crest - over a much easier/straighter jump.

'Greatest risk of career' pays off for Ogier at Rally Sweden (crash.net)

Rally Sweden winner Sebastien Ogier says he had to take 'the greatest risk of career' to claim victory in the tricky conditions to fight off Hayden Paddon and leaves Scandinavia with his perfect record intact.

The three-time WRC champion has continued the flawless defence of his title at Rally Sweden by winning the event for the second consecutive year by nearly half a minute from Hyundai's Hayden Paddon, while he also bagged three bonus points with victory on Sunday's Power stage.

The result sees the Volkswagen Motorsport driver take maximum points from the opening two WRC rounds having also won Rallye Monte Carlo and its Power stage last month.

However, Ogier's success was far from straightforward, with the French star asking for the event to be cancelled on Wednesday after warm temperatures melted large amounts of ice and snow on road sections which consequently caused the cancellation of nine stages.

After a couple of hairy moments during the opening stages Ogier saw his lead slashed to just 8.8 seconds by Paddon at the halfway point on Saturday and had to produce a masterclass of ice driving to inch out his lead before taking victory in a dominate fashion by winning the Power stage.

â€œWinning in Sweden again is an incredible feeling,â€ Ogier said. â€œI just love this rally. The conditions were far from ideal at the start of the week after the thawing and all the rain, which makes it all the more pleasing that we eventually had a really good, wintery Rally Sweden.â€

Reflecting on his battle against Paddon on Saturday afternoon Ogier says he took some huge gambles on the treacherous tracks in order to take back the momentum and is thrilled by his 34th career WRC rally win.

â€œYesterday [Saturday], we probably had to take the greatest risk of our career in order to win,â€ he said. â€œIt paid off, and I am just really happy.â€

Ogier moves on to 56 WRC points and is already 23 points clear of his closest rival Andreas Mikkelsen in the WRC drivers' championship.
