Prodrive tests upgraded Mini for World Rally Championship (AUTOSPORT.com)

The latest evolution of the Mini John Cooper Works WRC will be inspected by the FIA for a new homologation next week.

Prodrive was busy testing the new parts on the Mini in Southern Spain until early this week. Both Dani Sordo and Kris Meeke drove the car for two days each, completing close to 500 miles on gravel.

The new car includes a revised front spoiler - which is the only visual alteration from the current Mini - a lighter rear wing and some minor engine tweaks.

Beyond the homologation changes, the next specification of Mini will include further development of the Ohlins dampers and a new lithium iron battery.
Provding the car passes its homologation inspection next week, the new car is expected to be seen for the first time on Rally of Portugal at the end of next month.

Prodrives Richard Taylor said: "The tests went very well, the drivers are very happy with the car and both of them felt the improvements. We certainly got what needed from the test."

Rally Portugal: first outing for the modified MINI John Cooper Works WRC.

It is ten months since the MINI John Cooper Works WRC made its successful debut in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) at the 2011 Rally Italy on Sardinia. The new version of the MINI WRC, the "01B", is now set to get its first outing at the Rally Portugal (29th March to 1st April). MINI has worked together with Prodrive to modify well over 100 technical details, in order to be able to follow on from past success and provide the drivers with an even more powerful car.

Dirk Hollweg, Head of MINI Motorsport, says: "We are already looking forward to seeing the results of the long, hard work put in by Prodrive out on the special stages. We will start the roll-out in Portugal. Previous results have shown us that the new car has great potential. However, we also know that the competition is tough and that this kind of further development programme is important. Prodrive recently spent four days testing the new car in Spain, and the findings of this test are very promising."

New face for the MINI John Cooper Works WRC.

MINI has been working on the first stage of the car's development since October 2011. New engine parts â€“ such as the exhaust manifold and electrical water pump â€“ have been homologated in order to further improve the car's top performance. Not only is a smaller fan belt used, which can be replaced faster if necessary, but the engine management system has also been revised.

The cooling system, dampers, suspension and aerodynamics of the MINI WRC have been optimised. The weight and centre of gravity have also been worked on. To be more precise, MINI has worked together with chassis partner Ã–hlins to improve the dampers, which should guarantee better stability and traction, particularly on gravel.

A significant reduction in weight was, for example, achieved by using a lithium-ion battery for the first time, which saved seven kilograms. Further modifications and a new production process for manufacturing the carbon-fibre-reinforced rear spoiler have saved a further three kilograms. These ten kilograms are now located at positions where they can increase the balance of the car.

While most of the changes will not be visible to vans, as they have been made within the MINI John Cooper Works WRC, observant fans will at notice the new air duct on the front of the MINI WRC. A new bumper attests to the advanced aerodynamics and improved engine cooling system. The MINI WRC will have a squatter stance on gravel in the future: Prodrive has achieved a lower clearance for this surface, in order to improve the routeing of air under the car and generate greater downforce on the front axle.

Prodrive has driven the new car at test sessions in southern Spain and the unanimous verdict is extremely positive. "Both drivers immediately noticed the improvement in the engine performance and the better handling," says Prodrive Team Principal Dave Wilcock. "That is a significant step forward for the MINI WRC, but our development work does not stop here, and the engineers are already looking for the next improvements, which will come later in the year."

Next up, however, is the outing under competitive conditions at the Rally Portugal, when MINI fans can be there in person to experience the world premiere of the MINI John Cooper Works WRC "01B".

Video of Dani Sordo out tearing up the gravel in Portugal. This is important testing for Sordo since he's more of a hard surface expert, needs all the loose surface practice he can get. I assume this is also a continuation of the testing Kris Meeke started on the new engine, chassis and aero improvements.

Exciting entry for Rally de Portugal (WRC.com)

Nineteen World Rally Cars will head the entry for Vodafone Rally de Portugal, round four of the FIA World Rally Championship powered by Nokia, which takes place from 29 March-1 April

Eight-time world champion and current championship leader Sebastien Loeb tops the entry in the Citroen Total World Rally Team DS3 WRC he shares with co-driver Daniel Elena.

Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen compete in a second factory entry with Nasser Al-Attiyah, Thierry Neuville and Peter van Merksteijn Jr all lining up in factory-assisted DS3s.

Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila head the Ford World Rally Team effort in Portugal alongside Petter Solberg and Chris Patterson.

Ott Tanak and Evgeny Novikov front the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team entry in a brace of Fiesta RS WRCs, with the Brazil World Rally Team starting its first event of 2012 by entering a Fiesta for Daniel Oliveira.

Mads Ostberg is entered in an Adapta World Rally Team Fiesta, while fellow Norwegian Henning Solberg will contest the mainly gravel event in one of the Christian Loriaux-designed cars.

Jari Ketomaa is back in the WRC for the first time since Rally Sweden in a Fiesta, while Dennis Kuipers will start his first event of 2012 in one of the cars. Martin Prokop continues his 10-event WRC campaign in Portugal in a Fiesta.

Local hero Armindo Araujo will front WRC Team MINI Portugalâ€™s bid alongside countryman Miguel Ramalho. Brazilians Paulo Nobre and Edu Paula fill the squadâ€™s second John Cooper Works WRC.

The Prodrive WRC Team breaks cover in Portugal with a pair of John Cooper Works WRCs for Dani Sordo and Patrik Sandell.

Rally de Portugal marks the third round of the Super 2000 world championship with category regulars Yazeed Al Rajhi, Craig Breen, Maciej Oleksowicz and Hayden Paddon all in action. Pedro Meireles appears as a wildcard entrant in an R4-specification Mitsubishi Lancer.

Sebastien Ogier and Kevin Abbring wonâ€™t be eligible for SWRC points in their Volkswagen Motorsport-run Skoda Fabia S2000s but are likely to set the pace in Class 2.

The second FIA WRC Academy season gets underway in Portugal with 13 exciting entries including local driver Joao Silva and title favourite Alastair Fisher.

In total 57 crews will tackle the event based in the countryâ€™s Algarve region following a superspecial stage in the capital Lisbon on Thursday 29 March.

The team which now officially represents the MINI brandâ€™s interests in the WRC will be hoping to make a splash in Portugal after a reasonably successful run in Mexico where Armindo Araujo finished seventh overall.

Armindo Araujo, 34, Portugalâ€™s only representative in the WRC, claimed his best world class result to date in Mexico (seventh overall) despite running first on the road during the opening day. He was in a hurry for the Mexican round to finish, however, because he wanted to have as much time as possible to prepare for the championshipâ€™s next encounter, the Rally de Portugal, which is one of the most important eventâ€™s on Team MINI Portugalâ€™s 2012 calendar.

â€œMy week will start by contesting the Fafe Rallysprint on Saturday, March 24. I hear that around 13 WRC drivers have accepted the organisersâ€™ invitation to take part in this event. It should be great show which I am sure will attract thousands of spectators. I will probably benefit from good support, too, because I live just 10km from Fafe,â€ says Armindo who has a following of some 20,000 fans on Facebook. â€œIn 2001, I was fortunate enough to be able do this legendary stage in a CitroÃ«n Saxo with my current co-driver Miguel Ramalho. It was our first ever Rally de Portugalâ€¦â€

Meanwhile, MINI Portugal has been working on the promotional side of its home round of the WRC. â€œThere will be a giant MINI on the roof of a building for the super-special in Lisbon. MINI Portugal really wanted to communicate as much as possible during the event,â€ notes the two-time PWRC champion (2009 and 2010) who was the first driver to compete in a MINI, on last yearâ€™s Rally de Portugal.

Armindo Araujoâ€™s new, Michelin-equipped MINI John Cooper Works WRC will feature the very latest technical evolutions to have been developed by Prodrive. The â€˜01Bâ€™ version will have around 100 new components, while the engine will be three percent more powerful. A test programme is planned on Sunday, March 25. WRC Team MINI Portugal has also invested in a new motorhome which will be located at the rallyâ€™s service park alongside the Estadio de Algarve to welcome the brandâ€™s numerous guests.

The fourth round of the 2012 FIA World Rally Championships will take teams to Portugal from Wednesday, March 28, until Sunday, April 1. Who will follow in the footsteps of SÃ©bastien Ogier?

This is the first time since Marcus GrÃ¶nholm won in New Zealand, in 2007, that the winner of a rally has not been able to defend their victory the following year. Indeed, the two-time Rally de Portugal winner SÃ©bastien Ogier is contesting this yearâ€™s event in a Skoda Fabia S2000 which little chance of coming first in the Algarve.

The fight to follow in the Frenchmanâ€™s footsteps is consequently likely to feature the works stars SÃ©bastien Loeb, Mikko Hirvonen, Petter Solberg and Jari-Matti Latvala, although Loeb is the only one of these four drivers to have already won this event (in 2007 and 2009).

The competitive distance has been extended and this yearâ€™s menu features three night-time stages on Thursday after the super-special which will get the event underway in Lisbon. These three stages total just 35km in length, but they promise to make start order choices complex since hanging dust could be a problem after nightfall. The results of Wednesday morningâ€™s Qualifying Stage and the driversâ€™ choice of start positions could have a major influence on the final result.

On the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, competitors will be on familiar territory, although all the stages will exceed 20km in length, with the exception of S. Bras de Alportel (16.18km) and the Power Stage (5.08km). Tavira (SS5/8, 25.01km) is entirely new.

The entry features 19 WRC cars. The list includes the returns to the championship of Dennis Kuipers (Fiesta RS WRC) and Daniel Oliveira (Fiesta RS WRC). The Vodafone Rally de Portugal is also a qualifying round of the SWRC (round 3) and WRC Academy (round 1).

Michelinâ€™s partners will benefit from the hard-compound Latitude Cross H1, an evolution of the â€˜Hâ€™ version used in Portugal last year. In addition to their allocation of 40 hard-compound tyres, the Priority 1 and 2 drivers will have 10 soft-compound Latitude Cross tyres available to cover damp conditions.

Rally fans will get a taster of what's in store when Portugal hosts round four of the FIA World Rally Championship powered by Nokia next week at the inaugural WRC Fafe Rally Sprint event on Saturday.

Billed as a “luxury appetiser” by event organisers, the WRC Fafe Rally Sprint will give those living further north in Portugal the chance to experience the spectacle of World Rally Cars in action.

As many as 13 WRCs from Citroen, Ford and MINI are set to tackle the six-kilometre gravel course, which covers part of the Fafe-Lameirinha stage, made famous when Portugal’s WRC counter was based in the north of the country prior to its move south in 2007.

Among the drivers taking part are Citroen stars Mikko Hirvonen and Sebastien Loeb, Ford duo Jari-Matti Latvala and Petter Solberg, plus MINI aces Dani Sordo and Portugal’s Armindo Araujo. Several Portuguese talents will also be in action, while a number of WRC Teams will be represented.

Vodafone Rally de Portugal runs from 28 March-1 April and consists of 22 special stages over a competitive distance of 434.77 kilometres. The opening stage takes place in the capital Lisbon at 14:30hrs local time on 29 March.

Fafe glory for Solberg (WRC.com)

Petter Solberg will start Vodafone Rally de Portugal next week on a high following his dramatic victory over Sebastien Loeb in the Fafe Rally Sprint demonstration event east of Porto yesterday (Saturday).

Solberg, in a factory Ford Fiesta RS WRC, beat Sebastien Loeb by two hundredths of a second in a thrilling showdown on the 6.34-kilometre gravel stage, organised as a precursor for round four of the FIA World Rally Championship powered by Nokia.

After his triumph in front of an estimated 100,000 fans, the 2003 world champion said: “I put on a big attack and it feels great to win. I’m very happy, and I hope we can continue this way in the rally. We’ve taken the first step, and now Jari-Matti [Latvala] and I need to beat everybody else next week, too.”

The Fafe Rally Sprint stage is a scaled down version of the famous Rally de Portugal run last used in 2001 prior to the country’s WRC qualifier moving to the Algarve region in the south of the country.

“What an unbelievable stage,” said Solberg, who was co-driven by regular partner Chris Patterson. “There were some really big and difficult jumps, but they only made it even more exciting. This was a team effort and a team victory, for me and for Jari-Matti and for all the guys who did such a good job again with the car.”

Solberg and Latvala were among 30 world championship aces in action on the event. Finn Latvala was faster than Solberg on the first run but was beaten by his Norwegian team-mate on run two, which handed Solberg a shot at the final run as Ford’s representative.

Behind factory Citroen ace Loeb, Dani Sordo took third in his Prodrive WRC Team MINI John Cooper Works WRC. Qatar World Rally Team’s Nasser Al-Attiyah was fourth with M-Sport’s Ott Tanak fifth and local hero Armindo Araujo completing the top six.

Loeb ponders Portugal start tactics (MaxRally.com)

According to eight-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb, Rally Portugal will be the most tactically complex event of the year â€“ with plenty of opportunities for a surprise winner.

As well as road position, traditionally a determining factor, visibility will also be a big issue due to hanging dust. This will be particularly problematic during the stages run at night, as was shown on the night stages in Spain last year, which the drivers described variously as â€œimpossibleâ€ and â€œdangerousâ€.

â€œIn the evening, the dust can remain hanging in the air indefinitely,â€ said Loeb. â€œSo, if itâ€™s like this, is it better to sweep the road clean and at least have a good view, or have cleaner roads but risk being caught in a fog of dust?â€

According to this yearâ€™s rules, the winner of the qualifying stage will get first choice of starting position, but it wonâ€™t be as straightforward as usual if there is no wind and hanging dust. Under these circumstances, Loeb says that there is no point in compromising: you either want to be at the very front of the field or the very back.

â€œYes, you could pick an â€˜averageâ€™ starting position of seventh or eighth,â€ he pointed out. â€œBut you will lose every time. More than anywhere else, where you start in Portugal will be a difficult choice. You have to analyse he weather as well.â€

Prodrive team reveals podium hopes (WRC.com)

The new Prodrive WRC Team will break cover on Vodafone Rally de Portugal this week with team principal Dave Wilcock convinced that a podium finish is a strong possibility for the British squad's lead driver Dani Sordo.

Previously run as the MINI WRC Team, the outfit will consist of the same personnel - including number one pilot Sordo - that helped to secure three world championship podiums from seven starts for the Anglo-German makeâ€™s John Cooper Works WRC. Prodrive also oversaw Subaruâ€™s trio of WRC driversâ€™ and manufacturersâ€™ titles previously.

While Sordoâ€™s MINI will be similar in appearance to the car he drove on Rally Sweden last month, albeit with increased BP branding as part of an extended partnership with the firm, more than 100 modifications have been made since then as part of a major homologation programme.

These include a three per cent increase in engine power; a tweaked front bumper to improve cooling and aerodynamic performance; enhanced Ohlins gravel dampers; and some significant weight savings primarily due to the use of a lithium ion battery for the first time.

â€œThe newly homologated parts make a significant improvement to the car and should we run error free, I would certainly hope that Dani could be up there fighting for a podium,â€ said Wilcock. â€œHowever, the competition does have the significant advantage of having already competed on gravel this year in Mexico, but Dani certainly knows the Portuguese event well and has achieved podium finishes here on his last three outings.â€

Sordo didnâ€™t compete in Portugal last year and also skipped Rally Guanajuato Mexico earlier this month. However, he has conducted extensive testing in his uprated MINI and has a strong record on the Algarve-based event.

â€œThe new car felt really, really good,â€ said Spaniard Sordo. â€œThe team at Prodrive have done a great job. The new car feels like a big step forward and I could immediately feel the difference. I have been on the podium the last three times I have been at Portugal and I will be fighting hard to get MINIâ€™s first podium on a gravel event.â€

Patrik Sandell, from Sweden, will line up in a second Prodrive WRC Team entry. Armindo Araujo and Paulo Nobre will also pilot Prodrive-developed MINIs in Portugal.

Portugal preview: Memorable moments and talking points (MaxRally.com)

Round four of the 2012 World Rally title chase in Portugal is very nearly upon us, so here is MAX RALLY's rundown of the main talking points, and Portugal's place in WRC history.

PRE-RALLY TALKING POINTS

Night stages: The big change to the itinerary is the addition of a late-night section on Thursday evening, as the rally gets underway with three after-dark tests in quick succession.

Prodrive Minis are back: Mexico was the first event that Prodrive had to skip amid the fall-out from its change of relationship with Mini/BMW, but it is back for Portugal with two upgraded John Cooper Works WRCs for Dani Sordo and Patrik Sandell.

Can Latvala keep it on the road: Portugal was the scene of Latvala's famous mountainside crash in 2009, and this year he arrives fresh from two very costly crash exits in the first three rallies.

Can Solberg translate Fafe pace: It was only a short blast through one of Portugal's classic rallying arenas, but Solberg's win in last weekend's rally sprint had symbolic value as the Norwegian's first triumph in Ford colours, and was a sign of his growing confidence in the Fiesta.

Can Novikov regain his momentum: Brilliant in Monte Carlo and Sweden, but a bit underwhelming in Mexico even before his two crashes. Which version of Novikov will we get in Portugal?

What will DMACK do this time? The first event in DMACK's major 2012 programme with Jari Ketomaa was not a conspicuous success, as he opted not to return under Rally 2 in Sweden as he felt the tyres just weren't competitive enough in the conditions. On more predictable gravel, DMACK will hope it's a very different story.

Araujo at home: In the days when Portugal was in WRC exile, its hero Armindo Araujo won three times. A full season in the Motorsport Italia run, Portugal colours bedecked Mini is his biggest WRC chance yet, and racing in front of his local supporters will be both the highlight of his year, and a source of great expectation and pressure.

Academy kicks off: Round one of the M-Sport-promoted second year of the WRC Academy gets underway in Portugal. Expect the likes of Alastair Fisher, Pontus Tidemand, Brendan Reeves, John MacCrone and Elfyn Evans to be at the sharp end.

MEMORABLE PORTUGAL MOMENTS

* Many years of hair-raising spectator overcrowding, particularly at the infamous Fafe stage...

* Sebastien Ogier defeating Sebastien Loeb to take his first WRC victory when still part of the Citroen Junior team in 2009.

* All the leading Fords getting five minute time penalties due to a rear window homologation issue - that effectively meant they were the weight of a Dairy Milk bar underweight - in 2007.

* Marcus Gronholm makes a comeback in a Subaru in 2009, fights for the lead, then crashes out.
