Whilst WRC is a trial held in imperfect conditions, Mr Meeke has every right to expect some what reasonable visibility during the event. Anyone who has driven at night in a heavy fog knows how treacherous it is and dust can be no better. Those inside the FIA questioning Mr Meeke's testicular fortitude will also be the same individuals standing around ringing their hands, wondering how such a thing happened when a competitor is killed...

Very true Mark. There is "risk", which the WRC is all about and there is "unnecessary risk". IMHO.

Unnecessary risk, well put. The sort of thing all forms of motorsport should be always looking to address. Race at night and race on loose, dusty surfaces, but avoid combining the two.

Exactly. Racing with the reduced visibility which night brings, is acceptable risk. racing at night, in the dust, with zero visibility, is not.

I have been to many horse trials, where the footing in front of a certain jump gets dangerous to horse and rider, so the jump is bypassed on the course, by the remaining riders.

Risk is part of the game, but there is a limit, because it is, after all, just a game.

Sorry if this is a re-post picture. Hadn't seen it before.
Kinda reminds me of the broad jump with the distance markers....
