I was out of pocket for a few weeks and completely missed this one.

According to reports Dani Sordo did well for 11 stages and then had some big problems on Stage 12, the last stage of Day 2. He ran strongly again on the final day and still managed to finish 10th overall.

New MINI driver Chris "Atko" Atkinson (filling in for Araujo) was working to learn the car and get comfortable with it and still managed to come in 5th!

I'll post a few bits and pieces.

Based in the historic city of Trier in Germanyâ€™s wine-producing Mosel region, ADAC Rallye Deutschland is an asphalt rally like no other with all three days of the event held on different types of sealed surfaces.

The event joined the World Rally Championship roster in 2002 when Sebastien Loeb claimed his maiden victory in the series. The Frenchman went onto to win the event on the next seven occasions before his run came to an end in 2011 when a puncture handed first place to Loebâ€™s then Citroen team-mate Sebastien Ogier.

Loeb, world rally champion on eight occasions, points to the need to maintain an extremely high level of concentration as the secret behind his recent successes, particularly in the Baumholder military training area, where giant boulders, known as hinkelsteins, line the route.

â€œItâ€™s an absolute challenge,â€ Loeb admits. â€œThere are some very fast sections, some extremely difficult passages, narrow and then wide asphalt roads and the surfaces are so varied. The stages in the Mosel vineyards require 100 per cent concentration and the satisfaction afterwards [when you get it right] is immense because the roads are so narrow.

â€œThen you have the Baumholder, which are unlike any other asphalt roads we know. There are rough, clean, wide and fast sections with gravel, mud and dust thrown in. Nowhere is it harder for a driver to find the right mix. If you want to win in Germany you have to be successful on these stages.â€

One of the highlights of ADAC Rallye Deutschland in recent seasons is the inclusion of the Circus Maximus superspecial stage, which runs through the centre of Trier, Germanyâ€™s oldest city, and marked the scene of ex-Grand Prix driver Kimi Raikkonenâ€™s first stage victory in the WRC when the Finn went fastest of all in 2010.

Dani Sordo has revealed a feeling of disappointment after a puncture dropped him out of third place on ADAC Rallye Deutschland's Arena Panzerplatte stage this morning.

Sordo, in a Prodrive WRC Team MINI John Cooper Works WRC, had moved into the final podium spot with the fastest time through stage eight, Peterberg. But the incident means he is down in sixth position on the FIA World Rally Championship qualifier, almost four minutes adrift of leader Sebastien Loeb in a factory Citroen.

“I’m really disappointed because we were in a good place and it was feeling pretty good,” said the Spanish driver. “We started to feel the car move a lot from the rear so we take a little bit carefully because we thought it was a puncture. But we had hard compound tyres on the front and soft on the rear and I thought the car was moving a lot for that but then it was moving more and more and more. The air went out really, really slow and we do a lot of kilometres but then after we changed the puncture.”

Had it not been for the deflation, Sordo could have climbed into second place following Petter Solberg’s exit with a broken right-rear wheel.

“I am sorry for him but it could have been better for this if this had not happened but this Baumholder stage is difficult for that,” said Sordo. “Now we need to try to continue and try for fourth position but no more.”

Stage description:
By Volkswagen Motorsport co-driver Julien Ingrassia: “I have 118 pages in my pace notes for this stage so we can say there are almost 118 junctions. Luckily the organisers put some little arrows during the recce otherwise we would get lost. Everybody knows this stage and although there are no big changes it’s totally new because it’s running in the reverse direction. Most of the roads are on concrete, 85 per cent, so we will see how the tyres will work, this is always a big question. It’s not such a worry in a Super 2000 car because we don’t have full power but in a World Rally Car you must take care.”

How the action unfolded:

ADAC Rallye Deutschland's famously challenging Arena Panzerplatte stage claimed two more high-profile victims on its second running of the 2012 event as Ott Tanak and Dani Sordo both crashed out.

Tanak had taken his first two FIA World Rally Championship stage wins on asphalt on the preceding two tests as he battled to pull clear of fifth-placed Mads Ostberg.

But it all went wrong on Panzerplatte, as Tanak hit one of the stage's notorious hinkelsteins and took the right rear wheel off his Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Sordo, who had been running sixth, sustained damage to his Prodrive MINI and lost coolant, forcing him to stop and try desperately to effect repairs.

The stage was ultimately halted when Peter van Merksteijn Jr crashed near Tanak and blocked the road.

Only a handful of cars therefore made it through to the finish. Fastest of them was rally leader Sebastien Loeb, who ended the day with a 1m42.9s advantage.

"A huge lead, so again a very good day and no problems," said Loeb. "We really had to go slow in this long stage because anything can happen in this one. We saw that in the first pass. Now we've finished the second day and it's looking good for tomorrow."

Loeb beat Jari-Matti Latvala by 0.7s, to the Ford man's huge frustration.

"I wanted to win this stage. This stage was so important," said Latvala. "[Loeb] came back. He went very hard in the middle of the stage and at the end I made some little mistakes and I'm a little bit angry with myself."

Latvala's time still allowed him to pull a few more seconds away from Mikko Hirvonen, who nevertheless produced his strongest performance of a tough weekend as he figured out the keys to getting the best out of the Citroen DS3 WRC on the German stages.

Tanak's crash means Ostberg is now very comfortable in fourth.

"It was a big fight between us. He took lots of time off me," said Ostberg. "He pushed very hard in the beginning and we were equal on the splits until he crashed. We were pushing really hard and he must have done too.

"It was quite on the edge and after that I didn't want to risk anything. It would be stupid to do a mistake in this position now."

The incidents also elevated Chris Atkinson into the top five on his debut in the WRC Team MINI Portugal entry.

"We knew if we ran at a solid pace then we were going to get a decent result," said Atkinson. "I didn't expect to be in fifth at the end of day two, but we'll take it."

Of the three MINI WRC crews, Chris Atkinson fared best on a challenging second day of the Rally Deutschland, and goes into Sunday’s final leg in fifth place overall.

“Panzerplatte” – The name of the longest and most difficult special stage on the Rally Deutschland is legendary. This year the marathon stage again lived up to its expectations by comprehensively reshuffling the field, in the process unfortunately taking Dani Sordo out of contention after he had lain a strong third until the first pass of Panzerplatte. Dani had just driven a stormer on the eighth stage of the Rallye Deutschland in his MINI John Cooper Works WRC, posting the best time on the second test of the day to move up into third place overall – his minimum target for the Rally Deutschland after he last year finished in that position. This season Dani aimed to at least emulate that feat.

Then came the ninth stage of the rally, Panzerplatte – the tank testing track. The 46,54-kilometre marathon test is not only the longest stage of the Rally Deutschland, but by far the toughest. The course cutting through the military ranges demands full concentration and punishes driver error. Excursions invariably result in contact with massive “hinkel stones” – enormous blocks which seldom permit cars to return to service in one piece, so unyielding are they. Dani started the stage in spectacular fashion, recording a split times just slightly off that of world champion SÃ©bastien Loeb, who had started first.

Then Dani slowed markedly, eventually coming to a stop. Consternation within his Prodrive WRC Team, and naturally amongst MINI fans who had congregated on the Panzerplatte to experience the action first-hand. Then Dani continued, having lost valuable time. What happened? The answer came at the stage finish: “Tyre damage,” a disappointed Dani reported. Initially only slowly, then more serious. “We had to stop and change the tyre.” Third place and a potential podium place were lost, with Dani dropping down to sixth place, 1:52,1 minutes adrift of that podium place.

“Some real bad luck,” stated the Prodrive WRC Team after analysing the tyre damage, “as it seems Dani did not hit anything.” Yet, the main drama was still to come: During the second pass Dani made involuntary acquaintance with an uncharitable hinkel stone, and was forced to retire. On Saturday evening the damage to the MINI WRC was still being surveyed with a view to returning Dani to action on Sunday morning. Fortunately Dani and co-driver Carlos del Barrio were uninjured in the incident.

By comparison Chris Atkinson’s Saturday must have felt like a pleasant stroll through the park. Having started the day in ninth place, the WRC Team MINI Portugal’s latest addition to its driving strength moved up to seventh at the halfway point. After the second pass of the Panzerplatte, during which Peter Van Merksteijn rolled into retirement, Atko moved up to fifth overall. “We had a good run,” said the Australian at the finish. “I had not expected to end the day in fifth place, but we take it.”

Just how many MINI WRCs will contest the final leg of the Rally Deutschland on Sunday is still open. Atko is set; a decision on Dani will be taken overnight. A definite non-starter is Atko’s team-mate Paulo Nobre, who was forced to withdraw from the rally for personal reasons, heading back home to Brazil. Three stages totalling 65,89 timed kilometres are on the agenda for Sunday. The 13th stage starts at 9:13 CEST, and will be driven twice in succession. Then comes the grand finale: the Power Stage around the world famous Porta Nigra, with tens of thousands of fans expected to pack Trier’s inner city. The Power Stage starts at 13:21 local time (and CEST).

Prodrive hopeful of Sordo return (WRC.com)

The Prodrive WRC Team is readying itself for a late night tonight in the hope of getting Dani Sordo back on track after his retirement from day two of ADAC Rallye Deutschland.

Having already suffered a puncture - caused after an impact split the wheel rim - on the first run at Panzerplatte this morning, Sordo then crashed Prodrive’s MINI John Cooper Works WRC out of day two on the second run through the event’s longest test.

The MINI suffered damage to the radiator following a collision with a hinkelstein on the FIA World Rally Championship event.

Prodrive WRC Team principal Dave Wilcock said: “After the real high of the stage win on stage eight we knew Dani could get a podium with the pace he and the car were showing. But, while pressing on, Dani has been caught out under braking by a sudden change in surface grip, and on Panzerplatte with the large hinkelsteins, such small errors don’t go unpunished, as many top drivers have found to their cost today.

“We’ll get the car back to service late tonight and see if it can be fixed, so that we can return tomorrow for the three stages, including the points scoring Power Stage in Trier, to give Dani as much competitive mileage ahead of our next event in France.”

A controlled drive on all 15 special stages making up the 2012 Rally Deutschland saw Chris Atkinson secure fifth place overall upon his MINI WRC debut. Dani Sordo finished ninth.

New car, new team, renewed confidence for the final four rallies of the current WRC season: That is the synopsis of the WRC Team MINI Portugal following Chris Atkinsonâ€™s first appearance in the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. Despite only having switched to the WRC Team MINI Portugal shortly before the Rally Deutschland, the Australian nicknamed "Atko" immediately felt visibly comfortable with the MINI WRC. Although he had not tested meaningfully prior to the event, Atko mastered all 15 special stages of the Rally Deutschland with his controlled, consistent driving style.

"I tried to prevent doing anything stupid," Atko constantly repeated during the German rally. "It is all about getting a feel for the car." When the going got even tougher on Saturday during the Rally Deutschlandâ€™s most difficult stage, the feared, so-called "Panzerplatte" which pushed various drivers beyond their limits, Atko kept a cool head to move into the fifth place overall he was to impressively defend against rising star SÃ©bastien Ogier all the way to finish.

Atko can be well satisfied after posting the best result of all MINI WRC drivers on the Rally Deutschland, on which world champion SÃ©bastien Loeb once again proved invincible. "It was extremely valuable experience. I desperately wanted to make it to the finish in order to amass as much experience with the MINI WRC as possible," Atko said after the event. His next event with the MINI WRC will be the Rally Great Britain (13-16 September), a three-week wait. Three further events await Atko this season â€“ during which time he will feel even more comfortable with the MINI WRC. Thus MINI fans have even more to look forward to.

The same applies to Dani Sordoâ€™s next outing, the Rally France (4-7 October). Having failed in his quest to score a second successive podium in Germany, Dani will head to France determined to prove his talent. The event is the next WRC round to be contested on asphalt, a surface on which both Dani and the MINI WRC feel at home. Following his third place on last yearâ€™s Rally Deutschland, he aimed to emulate the feat this year, but was forced to give up all hope of the podium on Saturday after first suffering tyre damage, then colliding with a boundary stone, on the infamous "Panzerplatte". The incidents dropped him from third overall to twelfth.

Daniâ€™s disappointment at missing the podium was palpable. However, those within the Prodrive WRC Team who know the Spaniard, know that Dani quickly forgets the past and concentrates on the future. Dani, co-driver Carlos del Barrio and the MINI WRC proved their mettle in Germany. On eight of the 15 stages he recorded top-five times, including setting three third-fastest times, a second place and a stage win. Following the Power Stage ninth place overall was his. "I had planned more for Germany," Dani said after the event. "However, incidents such as these on Saturday happen. I am now looking forward to France." So are MINI fans.

Atkinson: best is yet to come (WRC.com)

Chris Atkinson reckons his fifth place finish on ADAC Rallye Deutschland is the start of even better things to come for WRC Team MINI Portugal.

Atkinson, from Australia, was making his debut for the Motorsport Italia-run team on the all-asphalt round of the FIA World Rally Championship, which finished in Trier on Sunday afternoon.

The Australian, a former factory Subaru driver and semi-works Citroen pilot, hadnâ€™t driven his MINI John Cooper Works WRC in competition before and was tackling a sealed-surface round of the global series for the first time since 2008.

â€œThis result has given us a good base to work from so big thanks to the team who have done a fantastic job all weekend,â€ said Atkinson. â€œOur strategy was to get through a tricky rally without making any mistakes and it paid off. We can start fighting a bit higher up now and start moving forward.â€

While Atkinson finished a strong fifth, team-mate Paulo Nobre was forced to withdraw on Saturday and return to his native Brazil for family reasons. He had dropped out of contention when he retired on day one following an accident.

Disappointment for Sordo (Crash.net)

Dani Sordo left to reflect on what might have been after day two dramas in Germany

Dani Sordo admitted he was disappointed at only finishing tenth on Rally Germany after falling victim to the challenging Panzerplatte stage.

The Prodrive man had been running as high as third at the wheel of his MINI John Cooper Works WRC before a puncture on the first run through the 46km stage on Saturday saw him drop more than two minutes.

Worse was to follow on the second run through the stage however when he went off and hit a hinkelstein â€“ forcing him to retire from the second day.

Although he rejoined for the final day under the Rally 2 regulations, Sordo admitted he was disappointed not to be able to secure a better result to show the speed of the car, although he said there were plenty of positives to be taken out of the weekend.

"I am very disappointed, because we were going so well before the puncture and after that we were in sixth and didn't really have anything to fight for,â€ he said. â€œThe car was good, but certainly not having a safety note crew affected us as I did not have so much confidence. Still I think we can improve the car further and with more luck get a much better result in France."

Team principal Dave Wilcock agreed with Sordo that it was a weekend of mixed emotions when it came to the performance and the end result.

"We came here believing we had the pace to get a podium and by Friday evening and Saturday morning we were demonstrating that,â€ he said. â€œHowever, everything changed on Panzerplatte with the unlucky tyre deflation then Dani's off, and after that it was damage limitation. While I am clearly very disappointed with the result, I am pleased with the pace we have shown.

â€œWe can now focus on preparing for Rally France in six weeks comfortable in the knowledge that we continue to have the pace to compete at the front."

Since I know ya'll are scratching your heads and saying..."WTH is a hinkelstein?" I looked it up.

It's German for a large upright stone also know as a menhir.

A menhir (French, from Middle Breton : men, stone + hir, long[1]) is a large upright standing stone. Menhirs may be found singly as monoliths, or as part of a group of similar stones. Their size can vary considerably; but their shape is generally uneven and squared, often tapering towards the top. Menhirs are widely distributed across Europe, Africa and Asia, but are most numerous in Western Europe; in particular in Ireland, Great Britain and Brittany. There are about 50,000 megaliths in these areas,[2] while in northwest France alone there are 1,200 menhirs.[3] They originate from many different periods across pre-history, and were erected as part of a larger megalithic culture that flourished in Europe and beyond.

The function of menhirs has provoked more debate than practically any other issue in European pre-history. Over the centuries they have variously been thought to have been used by Druids for human sacrifice, used as territorial markers or elements of a complex ideological system, or functioned as early calendars.[4] Until the nineteenth century, antiquarians did not have substantial knowledge of prehistory; and their only reference points were provided by Classical literature. The developments of radiocarbon dating and tree-ring calibration have done much to further human knowledge in this area.
The word menhir was adopted from French by 19th century archaeologists. It is a combination of two words found in the Breton language; men and hir. In modern Welsh they are described as maen hir, or "long stone". In modern Breton, the word peulvan is used.

Steady on, guys....

Hinkelsteins, as found on Panzerplatte (loosely, tank practice ground), are man-made anti-tank reinforced concrete lumps coming up to knee height. They have two purposes:
1) to stop tanks from straying off the surfaced roads in Panzerplatte and tearing up the ground at corners/junctions;
2) to tear the wheels and suspensions off rally cars.

Admittedly the second one hadn't been thought of when these hinkelsteins were made, but they do that job very, very well.......

A menhir is generally a much bigger stone, man-sized or bigger. Here is Obelix, a character from the Asterix cartoon series that covers all the rest of the world, who is a charming giant who likes nothing better than carrying a menhir on his back.
