Within the same timeframe as the key punch FORTRAN programming was Texas Instrument's very first digital calculator. $89.95 with nothing but +-*/. To calculate square root required a complex string of calculations to extrapolate a close answer...and it didn't fit in a pocket.

Made it walk down the stairs and was amused for a few minutes...

Played with it until it became a tangled mess...

 

Ours was 1/2 inch thick tong and groove knotty pine and shiny varnished. Try and find wood like that available anywhere now.

 

I had one that looked like Gemini rocket with capsule and parachute. Lots of crickets made flights in that thing.
