Phone Operators. You know, the lady who you reached by dialing 0 on your phone dial. They used to be a integral part of using a phone. And, in the days before the 911 emergency number, it was the Operator who you dialed to summon the police, fire department, or ambulance (which, in many cases, had nothing to do with the fire department).
How many still walkin' and talkin' besides this'un ever cranked 2 long and 1 short for central? The line poles out to the home place were stripped down crooked old red cedar tree trunks.
A real barber shop where you could get a flattop and they had Gentleman's magazines mixed in with the others ( "Hey lady, do you know your kid is lookin at a gentleman's magazine?") - think I got knocked upside the head for that one.
Barber shop I went to, .25¢ a cut, a woman walked in and the whole place went quiet till she left. Ladies did NOT go into barber shops.
