This article provides information about official US safety recalls for the modern MINI. We intend to keep it up to date over time so consider it continuously UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
The listings are ordered chronologically based on the first model year included in the recall.
You may also find warranty extensions and anything else related that seems relevant.
Visit the related forum thread if you have any questions or comments. Also, please let us know (either in that thread or a pertinent thread linked therein) if you have additional information or know of anything missed here, either new or old.
Before we get to the specific recalls, let's start with some helpful tools available on the web.
MINI has a search page for OPEN safety recalls, just punch in your VIN:
Find Open Recalls
I think 'open' means if there is a recall associated with your MINI it will only show up in the search results if it has NOT already been repaired. I imagine this would be particularly helpful if you bought a used MINI and would like to know whether the previous owner(s) kept up. On the other hand, I'm the original owner of an '07 Honda Element and recently used the govt's similar VIN search to learn there are three open recalls and I haven't been notified by Honda about any of them...and one is for the brakes and was issued more than five years ago! Moral of the story: don't assume you know, check the database!
If you don't trust MINI, try the government's version:
https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/
Do yourself a favor and read the lists in the box below the VIN search tool to learn what the tool does and does not cover.
If you don't find any recall info but you're still suspicious or would like to know whether others have been reporting particular safety issues for which there aren't yet any recalls, here's another tool from the gov't that allows you to search more generally for reported safety issues by year, make and model:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues
Read carefully on that opening page and you'll notice there's also a way you can make your own safety complaint.
Okay, let's get to that list.
