It allows the fuel tank to vent without releasing gas vapors to the outside... sounds like an important thing, but I'm sure there was a simpler solution on older cars, before we started worrying about such things.

The old way was a vented gas cap. But it put a lot of fumes out in the atmosphere. If it was my car & I was keeping the oem fuel tank I'd keep it. I'd run a cat too.

I don't know if this car will be licensed for the road. If it is maybe it needs all the emissions gear on the car & working.

The canister weighs a bit so that could make removing it beneficial.

    Where do you live?
If West of me, I’d like you to keep
    your emissions stuff functional,
and many others who breathe would, too.

On my rally car I removed all the emission equipment. I ended up drilling a tiny hole in the gas cap. Otherwise it would act like it was running out of gas. Although the car was much simpler than a Modern one. All it had for emissions was the charcoal canister & an egr valve. Heck it just had a carburetor.

Fun fact, carburetor is in fact a French word that means DON'T fark with. ;)

Looks like the charcoal canister. Part of the evap emission system. Not sure how you'd remove it. Maybe just remove it & see what happens?

Not sure on that one. Chuck is right its the charcoal canister. All I know is it has to stay a closed system or you will get a check engine light.
Sorry I am not much help on that one

Pretty sure a CEL won't matter on a race car / hill climb racer. What does matter is how it runs. Will that affect how it runs, I have no idea. Are you going to run a fuel cell?

BTW: It doesn't help towards the original post, but protecting the fuel evaporative canister is the reason why you shouldn't "top off" your gas tank once the pump detects the tank is full. It can overfill the gas tank, causing fuel to run up the line meant for vapors and saturate the canister with gasoline, rendering it inoperable (and causing codes).

I wonder if you could remove in and put a check valve in its place. That way it can vent in but not out

On a Fiat I had long ago I took all the pollution stuff off of it when I removed the canister I put a one way check valve on it so as I burned gas it could draw in air but would not vent out. This worked well but that was pre OBDII.

As my father in law used to say, if’n it were’n me, I’d leave it hooked up and operational until I got everything else sorted out and then if need be I’d look into how to disconnect it the best way. Sorry I have no answer for the initial question.

Ummmm Race cars do not have to be emission compliant even in the USA. Oh and he is in France.
